Why St. Ignatius?

OMSI Science Camp

Each year the fourth and fifth graders (accompanied by parent chaperones) participate in an OMSI outdoor science school program. On alternate years the students visit Camp Kiwanilong along the Oregon coast (near Warrenton) and Camp Hancock in Central Oregon (located between the towns of Antelope and Fossil near the John Day River). Both facilities include a dining hall, primitive cabins with wooden bunks, a first aid cabin and a laboratory/nature center.

The education program consists of hands-on, investigative, problem-solving, natural science activities. The students learn science by doing science. They spend between 8 and 10 hours per day in science program activities, many of which take place outdoors. The days are typically broken into three main program times: a study block from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., interest groups from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., and an evening program from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. It is an excellent educational opportunity and an experience that our students will not soon forget!
