Community Outreach
"Since we tread along the same way
LET US EXTEND A HAND TO ONE ANOTHER
To help surmount the difficulties that present themselves."
Blessed Marie Rose Durocher,
Foundress of the Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary
We students, faculty, and families take these words of our patroness to heart. Outreach activities are a vital part of our community as children become aware of the needs of others and reach out to meet those needs.
Among our activities are monthly visits to seniors at Reedwood Care Center, preparing and serving meals at a downtown homeless shelter, making cards for a women’s shelter, and collecting “Pennies for the Poor” to help the Downtown Chapel. The 4th grade students participate in a “Lend a Hand” service program, going beyond their own families to serve the needy in their communities. The families participate in a monthly can and bottle drive which benefits children in third world nations, as well as the local Elizabeth House.
We regularly restock the parish St. Vincent De Paul food pantry, and participate in the parish’s “Rice Bowl” collection each Lent. Foster children and children from Portland’s Transition School receive Christmas gift boxes, filled by our students and their parents. We also collect peanut butter for AIDS patients. Students serve at the annual parish dinner.
In addition to these scheduled outreach projects, we answer special needs as they arise, be it flood, a family’s house fire, or circumstances from sickness. All of these activities help to promote a sense of caring and discipleship, which is so vital to Gospel living.
